PARADOX OF PEACE

The first edition of the Loreto College Model United Nations adopts the theme Paradox of Peace, which explores the complex and often contradictory nature of peace in the modern world. While peace is typically associated with harmony and the absence of conflict, this theme delves into how efforts to achieve or maintain peace can sometimes give rise to tension, inequality, or even violence. It encourages participants to critically examine global actions carried out in the name of stability, such as military interventions, diplomatic compromises, or economic measures and question whether they lead to genuine, lasting peace or merely suppress underlying conflicts. Through this theme, the conference aims to inspire deeper reflection, nuanced debate, and a more thoughtful approach to international relations.

Committees

01THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) serves as the primary deliberative organ of the United Nations, bringing together all member states to discuss and recommend solutions on a wide spectrum of international issues. In MUNs, UNGA simulations emphasize inclusive dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and consensus-building on matters ranging from global security to sustainable development. The committee is characterized by its formal procedures and broad agendas, offering delegates an opportunity to develop skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and policy formulation.

02THE UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a principal United Nations body responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights across the globe. In Model United Nations simulations, the committee provides a platform for delegates to engage with pressing human rights concerns such as civil liberties, humanitarian crises, and the protection of vulnerable populations. Deliberations in UNHRC require a careful balance between state sovereignty and international accountability, encouraging delegates to adopt a nuanced, ethical, and legally informed approach to global issues.

03LOK SABHA

The Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, is often simulated in MUNs to replicate domestic legislative processes and political dynamics. Unlike international committees, this forum involves delegates representing political parties or individual Members of Parliament, engaging in debates on national policies, bills, and contemporary issues. The committee is known for its dynamic and interactive nature, reflecting the vibrancy of Indian parliamentary democracy while demanding sharp argumentation, quick thinking, and a strong grasp of current affairs.
